What is the Barbican Centre
The Barbican centre is a gallery that is located in North London, next to Moorgate Underground Station. This centre houses Paintings, Photos etc. It even has a cinema screen. On this trip we visited the Constructing Worlds exhibition. This section was focusing mainly on Architecture. There were pictures of all different kinds of Buildings. One Photographer took images of buildings completely Out-Of-Focus.

Berenice Abbott
Court of the First Model Tenements in New York City
March 16, 1936 |
This photo is at a Dramatic view, taken at a Low Angle on the ground. Below the clothes line, looking at the buildings which at this angle are massive. Also the washing line is obstructing what is the main subject of the image, the buildings. Abbott probably did this to try and show what it was like on the streets of Louisiana during the 30's. 'Certain things are obstructing your view'. Abbott probably wanted to catch a photo of the washing as a way to emphasis how many people are living in this rather poor looking region. I doubt that a normal family would have this many clothes especially seeing how in the 30's there was the Great Depression, where everything was much more expensive. The multiple layers in this image can make the background [Buildings and Sky] rather Abstract.

This photo has got a Ghostly feeling to it, the walls are white with a few shades of a grey/black colour. On the left hand side of the image there is some natural light coming from the windows. Also there are some repetition of the columns, the 2 big circular ones in the middle and the 4 that are on each side. Finally whilst looking at this image you get the sense that we are looking at an old place that has moved on, abandoned, empty.

Luigi Ghirri
There is repetition of the tree trunks and the branches in the distance in this image.
There is a Contrast between the colour of the Snow and the colour of the Sky. They are similar colours, however they are different shades of the same colour. Their similarity is actually their Contrast. The snow gives a sense of fear, where is everybody. Is the photographer the only person here?. The brown building in the background stands out from the floor and the sky. It adds a ghostly feeling to the image. |

Luisa Lambri
This was possibly one of the most interesting photo in the gallery in my opinion. The reason why I find this really interesting is because this is just a window taken from an angle, whereas you could interpretate it as a rocket, with the black wall actually being the sky. Sometimes its better if the subject is Abstract because then it is easier to interpretate the subject of the image.

Julius Shulman
In the section dedicated to Julius Shulman. This photo was blown up to the size of the wall. This was my favourite image of the set. Not only 'cause it stood out. Another reason why this was my favourite is because this images makes me ask questions like, is this a drawing or an image. This is because if you looks at this through your eyes the foreground [the chair] appears to be taken with a camera however the section where people are and the streets looks like a drawing. This could show a Contrast in presentation. There is another good Contrast if you looks at the colour version. There is a massive Contrast in colour because the street shows colours like red, blue etc. whereas the house in the foreground is mainly white.

I want to be able to see the Words on the Window more clearly.
The first thing I did with this was make this image Black and white. This in my opinion was a step in the right direction. The next thing I did was change the Brightness and Contrast. I didn't change the Brightness but I did increase the amount of Contrast in the image. This as a result makes the words in the window easier to see. Therefore we will get a reflection. |
